Liberal Education is Key to a Successful Career

Cazenovia College’s Reisman Lecture Series will present Nicholas Lemann, dean, and Henry R. Luce Professor, at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.  Dr. Lemann’s lecture, "What Should You Learn in College?," will be presented on Monday, March 14, at  3:30 p.m., at the Catherine Cummings Theatre at Cazenovia College, and is free and open to the public.

Dr. Donald A. McCrimmon, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty at Cazenovia College, heads the Reisman Lecture Committee. He cites the opinions of many leaders of Fortune 500 businesses that “a liberal education is of prime importance to a successful, long-term career with advancement in those firms.”

McCrimmon says, “I believe this lecture will allow our College community, as well as the community at large, an unparalleled opportunity to learn and reflect on the perspectives of a nationally and internationally recognized professional, speaking on a subject of vital importance to us all.”

Lemann, at age 17, became a reporter for the Vieux Carre Courier, a New Orleans alternative newspaper. He graduated from Harvard College, where he concentrated in American history and literature, and was president of the Harvard Crimson. He was an editor for the Washington Monthly, and Texas Monthly; a member of The Washington Post’s national staff; and a national correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly. He was a staff writer and then Washington correspondent at The New Yorker, for which he continues to write. He has also published five books and numerous articles on education, history and journalism.

Cazenovia College’s Reisman Lecture Series is made possible through a gift from the Dorothy and Marshall M. Reisman Foundation, which is committed to using its resources to enhance the quality of living throughout Central New York through the support of local organizations.  Marshall Reisman was a trustee of Cazenovia College from 1994-1997.
