Interior Design

Cazenovia College’s award winning Interior Design Program offers students the knowledge and skills appropriate for success as interior design practitioners. A wide range of foundation courses using hand and computer skills are available such as drafting, drawing, two and three dimensional design, model building and rendering. Students move through progressively more challenging projects in practice areas such as Residential, Contract Furniture Systems, Hospitality, Healthcare, Lighting, Retail and Exhibition Design.

Graduates pursue careers in a wide variety of interior design areas including lighting design, 3D computer graphics, office space planning, fabric design, furniture manufacturing, and design of educational institutions. Alumni can also be found designing retail stores for well known brand names such as Nautica, Christian Dior, and Ralph Lauren. Graduates consistently find employment in developing interior work environments for office furniture equipment companies. Some also work for interior design, engineering and architectural firms, as well as the facilities departments of major corporations, such as General Electric and Home Depot. Residential design offers many the opportunities to run their own successful businesses. Others manage retail furniture outlets and product showrooms. Some graduates have pursued teaching careers or have completed advanced degrees in the fields of facilities planning or architecture.

Interior designers must be able to read blueprints, understand building and fire codes, and know how to make the space accessible to the disabled. Designers frequently collaborate with architects, electricians, and building contractors to ensure that their designs are safe and meet construction requirements. Many interior designers are becoming more involved in designing architectural detailing, such as crown molding and built-in bookshelves, or planning layouts of buildings undergoing renovation, including helping to determine the location of windows, stairways, escalators, and walkways.
