In all, approximately 130 intercollegiate student-athletes will have a direct benefit from the new field, as will more than 33% of the student body who participate in intramurals and informal athletics. In addition, the beneficial influence on the teaching mission for students and faculty is undeniable. Time saved in travel to and from off-site fields can be better allocated to the classroom, lab, and studio.
While the project is well underway, significant giving opportunities remain for taking the new field to the next level. Plans for a press box, bleachers, score board, and field maintenance are a part of the overall aim to make the turf field commensurate with student, parent, and coaching staff expectations for sporting facilities at the collegiate level.
Along with the positive effect that the new field will have on alumni, students, parents, faculty, and staff, it will also enable the College to expand its programming to community residents and the broader region. When the field is not in use by the College, youth sports leagues as well as middle school and high school teams will have access to the turf field for practice and play. There is also potential use by local sports organizations for league tournaments and special events, which would contribute to the growing regional sporting economy.
