Dear Cazenovia College Community,

We are looking forward to welcoming students back to campus this fall, subject to guidance from New York State and public health officials.

Knowing our students' desire to be on campus I am pleased to share that pending State approval, we are revising our academic calendar for the fall semester to move the start of classes a week earlier to Tuesday, August 18. We are also eliminating the traditional two day fall break in October. This will enable students and faculty to complete a full semester of instruction, including finals, before leaving campus for the Thanksgiving holiday. This condensed schedule, along with changes to facilities and protocols to meet social distancing and physical density best practices, reduces the risk of exposure associated with travel to and from campus. It also enables the College to fulfill academic requirements and is the least disruptive schedule for our students.

Return to Campus - Fall 2020



Cazenovia College formed its Campus Reopening Task Force in May 2020 in order to establish a plan for resuming operations as a residential campus in fall 2020. In doing so, the health and safety of the campus and local community was the top consideration as recommendations were developed. Guidance was received, and incorporated, from appropriate governmental and health agencies, including the Madison County Department of Health, New York State, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Three subgroups informed the work of the Task Force:
  • Health and Safety - focused on the protocols and practices that will help ensure the safety of our community, and made recommendations regarding testing and tracing, protocols for responding to positive tests, personal protective equipment (PPE), hygiene practices, campus cleaning cycles, and mitigation for at-risk populations.
  • Academic Delivery - worked on plans to enable the safe delivery of high-quality course content and appropriate student support, by focusing on recommendations related to course delivery options (in-person, online, and hybrid), class sizes and scheduling, physical classroom set-up, and the academic calendar.
  • Residential Campus - made recommendations that identified resources and polices required to enable living and learning in a residential setting, covering topics such as social distancing, residence hall logistics, dining hall practices, and expectations for campus events and athletics.
This report represents the culmination of the efforts of the Task Force to date. Its work will continue through the summer as we approach our fall reopening. During that time, recommendations will evolve and gain specificity as guidance, data, and best practice recommendations continue to emerge.
Feedback from our students has been unambiguous in asserting the desirability of on-campus living and instruction as the model that best supports their learning and development. This plan demonstrates our affirmative response to the educational needs of our students by allowing for a residential campus experience that prioritizes their safety, and the safety of our faculty, staff, and neighbors.

  • Cazenovia College will follow CDC, NY State, and Madison County public health guidelines at all times. The College will collaborate closely with the Madison County Health Department in making decisions in relation to metrics from monitoring procedures.
  • Offices and common areas are being configured to accommodate social distancing requirements based on plans provided by department heads for all areas of the College
  • Protective materials will be installed in spaces that serve as reception areas as identified by departments and offices.
  • Individuals on school property must wear face coverings when (1) indoors at all times, other than when alone in a room (with exception of roommates in their on-campus room); and (2) outdoors when in a 6 foot proximity to another individual. An acceptable face covering is one that is made of cloth or other filtering material, fully covers the nose and mouth, fits snugly against the sides of the face so there are no gaps, and is secured around the ears or head to prevent slipping. Face masks will be provided by the College to all students and all employees.
  • Hand sanitizer stations will be located on every floor of every building; portable hand pumps will be located in each classroom; personal-sized, refillable hand sanitizers will be provided to every employee.
  • All bathrooms and classrooms will be disinfected daily and as needed using CDC approved disinfectant; wipes be provided in every bathroom and classroom for interim cleaning by users of the facility.
  • The College will follow established policies for providing reasonable accommodations to students and employees with disabilities. The College will also consider additional adjustments or support for students and employees with health concerns that may not rise to the level of a disability as defined by law. HR will work with employees on a case-by-case basis.
  • The College Health Center will be coordinating Influenza immunization clinics for faculty, staff and students so all campus community members can be immunized.
  • Wellness and mental health support is available for students through Health and Counseling Center on campus; a list of local resources is available for employees from HR.


  • All personal travel for students and employees is discouraged. Anyone who does travel will be directed to adhere to any return-to-campus protocols in place at the time of travel.
  • Co-curricular or extracurricular travel for the fall is prohibited, with the exception of athletic teams. Necessary academic travel must be approved by the Dean of Faculty.
  • Faculty and staff travel away from the Central New York region is strongly discouraged, except where a critical academic or business need requires it, noting the following guidelines:
    • College-sponsored travel to any country specifically designated with a CDC Level-3 advisory remains prohibited until further notice.
    • All faculty and staff international travel, during the fall semester, requires the approval of the VP of Academic Affairs. The faculty or staff member must demonstrate a critical academic or business purpose supporting why the travel cannot be delayed and/or the reason the purpose for the travel cannot be accomplished via other means. Registration of all international travel by faculty and staff is required per existing travel safety policy.
    • Faculty and staff traveling domestically by common carrier on nonessential College business is discouraged. Extreme caution is urged for all personal domestic travel by common carrier.

Visitors to Campus

  • The College will not be hosting public events during Fall 2020 and campus facilities (e.g. fitness center, pool, library, dining hall, theatre, galleries) will not be open for non-College community use.
  • Admissions – visitors will complete health screening online through Liaison or upon arrival at the Admissions office. Visits limited to student and two family members.
  • All non-routine visitors – must sign in at Campus Safety, take temperature and complete health screening; number to call will be posted if safety officer is away from office. Visitors will be issued a badge to confirm they have completed the health screening.
  • Dining Services-deliveries to sign in and complete health screening with Dining Service personnel.

Prior to August 2

  • Employees that can continue to work from home, should do so.
  • Protocols are in place for those approved to work on campus daily and individuals coming to campus for part of or all of a day:
  • Approval from supervisor/department head required
  • No more than 50% of building/office capacity
  • Temperature check/health screening/reporting to be done at Campus Safety office
  • PPE required when within 6 feet of others
  • Maintain social distancing at all times
  • Disinfect bathrooms, common areas and equipment, such as copiers/printers, after use
After August 2
  • Plans submitted to HR by department heads for staggering of workforce
  • Return to work on campus must be approved by a Vice President.
  • All employees will be required to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test result taken August 2 – 14.
  • Random testing of a percentage of employees will take place on an ongoing basis.
  • Plan in place for employee temperature taking in each building – employees will also be required to take temperature at home before coming to work. An online questionnaire will be available for every employee to complete daily before starting work. Policy for students' temperature check is for them to self-monitor, if they have questions about symptoms call the Health Center.
  • Preparations and protocols are in place for:
  • Ability to social distance in work area, such as an enclosed office; or protective screening in place, or office reconfigured to enable social distancing
  • Completion of COVID-19 Health and Safety training, content for a training video will be provided by the Health Office.
  • Employees will complete daily temperature check/health screening/reporting; if employee responds "yes" to any of the questions, they will be instructed to notify Human Resources (re: COVID-19 concern) and their supervisor (to report sick day) and stay/return home until cleared to return to the College.
  • Individuals on school property must wear face coverings when (1) unable to maintain social distancing including moving throughout buildings; and (2) outdoors when in a 6-foot proximity to another individual.
  • Individuals will disinfect bathrooms, common areas and equipment, such as copiers/printers, after use; wipes will be provided in all bathrooms
  • Meetings will continue to take place online; if a face-to-face meeting is necessary, participants must social distance by 6 feet
  • Online health education for students prior to returning to campus regarding protection from the spread of COVID-19 and expected behaviors during the fall semester
  • The Department of Residence Life with the support of the Division of Student Affairs will schedule students for a staggered move in, will limit the number accompanying students, and will require and provide PPE in accordance with health guidance and with consideration for density of individuals within each living community. Ample appointment blocking will be provided for students and families to arrive on campus, conduct appropriate check in stops, and move their belongings in to the residences.
  • Testing- at present based on current guidance, the College will require students to complete diagnostic COVID-19 testing within an acceptable window of time prior to their arrival. Results must be presented in advance of their campus arrival. Students should contact their healthcare provider to arrange for a test.
  • On campus testing will be available for individuals with symptoms and in accordance with guidance. The College will be notified in conjunction with the County Department of Health by the external lab of any positive tests. Students who test positive and whose health permits them to remain on campus will be placed into isolation. A memorandum of understanding with Oneida Hospital has been established for students requiring elevated medical care while recovering from COVID-19.
  • Random testing of a percentage of students will take place on an ongoing basis.
  • Residential Living: Students will be assigned at or below room occupancy with rooms providing square footage in accordance with current guidance for distancing. The special housing accommodations request process will be used to determine needs and special placement for students with underlying health conditions. Specific residential floors where appropriate seclusion from main residential living can be secured are designated for students in quarantine and other similarly appointed space for students in isolation. Visitors within residential rooms will be prohibited. Masks are to be worn in all public areas of the residence and restrooms.
  • Classrooms: Classroom density will be reduced to accommodate minimum 6 feet social distancing and PPE will be required. All classrooms have been measured and reconfigurations of seats and tables drawn out to meet this requirement. Most courses will be in-person with flex and hybrid capabilities. A few courses will be delivered online only. All courses will be designed to go remote if required, including to accommodate quarantined students and/or faculty. Cleaning supplies and hand sanitizer will be available in the classrooms. Each faculty will receive a personal packet of markers, whiteboard erasers and cleaner to eliminate sharing of supplies.
  • Campus Activities: Traditional campus gathering spaces have been either cleared for alternate use (e.g. additional dining seating) or have been arranged for single seating with appropriate (6-10 feet) distancing. Cleaning schedules for all residential and academic facilities have been enhanced from 1 cleaning per day to 2, with cleaning supplies provided in all restrooms to allow for between-use cleaning. Campus activities, student club and organization activity, and all student leadership advising and advisory meetings will be conducted on remote platforms through fall semester unless guidance changes to permit otherwise. Vendors needing to bring materials to campus in advance of events will complete health screening and follow PPE protocols according to our visitor guidelines. Single entrance and exit designations are established where available in residential and College services settings, and signage and communication regarding campus expectations for appropriate PPE use, hand washing, distancing, density, cleanliness, health symptom screening, etc. will be provided through social media, video, website, campus email, and in hard copy posting throughout campus and beginning in advance of student arrival. A campus compact will be distributed and reviewed and included with residential student roommate agreements and emergency information. Student Conduct has established policies specific to expectations surrounding COVID-19 and campus health and safety. The Health and Counseling Center will provide remote appointment scheduling, preliminary health screening and sessions via HIPAA approved MS Teams platform.
  • Dining facility accommodations/plans: Dining facilities have been appropriately structured to honor density and distancing guidelines. All self-service eatery options have been removed (salad bar, dessert bar, etc.). Dining staff will serve hot items during traditional mealtimes. Additional and expanded pre-packaged and contactless grab and go options are available at all mealtimes and in all dining locations. Cashless payment options in the form of meal swipes, dining dollars, and credit card are available in all dining outlets. Students will receive a "Welcome Kit" upon fall arrival to include a sustainable use "to go" box to minimize the need to gather or remain in a dining facility. Dining halls will be closed between meal service each day for cleaning and disinfecting.

» Helpful Information for Student Return to Campus from Student Affairs

  • Fostering a culture of compliance through a comprehensive COVID-19 health and safety communications plan that includes campus community emails; videos; physical and digital signage throughout residential and academic buildings, offices and common areas, EEC, Athletics; regular campus updates.
  • The College Health Center will provide information regarding area drug stores, health care facilities and labs for testing of employees.
  • Random health screening of a percentage of students will take place on an ongoing basis.
  • Contact tracing plan: The College has established a relationship with the Madison County Department of Health to conduct contact tracing. To assist with contact tracing, employees will be required to keep a daily log of visitors to their office. An electronic record of employee and student card swipes is also maintained.
  • Regular campus-wide communication will promote ongoing daily self-monitoring with appropriate referral care options for concerned individuals.

Isolation plan: Students testing positive for COVID-19 during the academic year and whose health permits them to remain on campus will be provided single-room housing and remote course material, interaction with their professors, and completion of course assignments. Protocols for restroom cleaning, meal delivery, and health checks will ensure distancing from isolated individual, and contactless operations, while maintaining compliance with NYS and County Department of Health guidelines. The College will support and assist County contact tracing needs as requested. A memorandum of understanding with Oneida Hospital has been established for students requiring elevated medical care while recovering from COVID-19.

Quarantine plan: Students exhibiting symptoms will be assessed and testing administered through the College Health Center. While awaiting results, the student and their roommate (if any) will be quarantined in their residence. Remote course materials, interaction with their professors, and completion of course assignments will be available to the students. Protocols for restroom cleaning, meal delivery, and health checks will ensure distancing from quarantined individuals, and contactless operations, while maintaining compliance with NYS and County Department of Health guidelines.

Communication: In the event a student or employee tests positive, a communication will be sent to the campus community in coordination with Madison County Department of Health providing pertinent information regarding potential exposure. These communications will be logged in a central location on the College's COVID-19 web page.

If the event the College needs to shutdown, either by self-determination or as required by NYS or Madison County Department of Health, priority attention will be given to appropriately maintaining activities central to the College's mission/operation, and to the health and safety of the campus community. Course delivery would be immediately transitioned to remote delivery and the college would enact the move-out procedures as indicated below.

Secondary operations would be evaluated and reduced accordingly and consistent with the College plans as enacted in Spring 2020.

Move-out: In the event that the campus needs to vacate its residences, a protocol has been established for scheduling move-out in a staggered manner with consideration of visitor (family) limits for pick up, appropriate PPE expectations for both students and the individual assisting with move-out/pick up, proper traffic directional and density control in hallways, and appropriate allotment of time for packing and removal of belongings. With several live-in professionals and a protocol for campus security operations to continue 24/7, students who are delayed in leaving campus will be accommodated until appropriate arrangements can be made. Additional resources supporting food and housing security have been identified and are available to College personnel assisting students should either or both issues be a barrier to their leaving campus.

Communication: Initial shutdown communications and ongoing status updates will be communicated to the campus community by email and will be posted on the College's COVID-19 web page.
