Growing up in a small town, I always wanted to explore the world around me, something my family never really got the chance to do. So, I sought out the study abroad program at Cazenovia College to fulfill this childhood dream of mine. Now that I am here in Canterbury, England, I can honestly say that it was one of my best decisions.
I think the biggest highlight for me is being able to see the fashion in Europe. As a fashion designer, I am always looking at what streetwear is being worn around me. Before coming to England, my boss at a clothing company told me that the fashion in Europe is like nothing in America and is so much better. After seeing the fashion personally, I agree.
Fashion in England is very bold and colorful with hints from the 70’s and 80’s. People walking around the city of Canterbury often are dressed up rather than in casual jeans and t-shirts. Big trends I have seen lately are short skirts and black tights with combat boots, high-waisted dresses and outfits, and bell-bottom pants.
I can use the trends I have seen in Canterbury to forecast future trends. It is important to understand fashion from different cultures, and designers such as myself can use these fashion trends as inspiration for their own designs. This experience has been so eye-opening for me and I am really enjoying my time in England.
