Google+

Google+ is a social networking platform that gives users a unique social experience with options including video chat, communities, circles and more. Google+ is connected with Google, making it a great tool for research and information.

What are circles?
Circles are an easy way to organize your real-life interactions into different groups. For example, all of your classmates from your First Year Seminar would be placed in one circle and all of your close friends in another. Faculty members might find it helpful to create circles for their departments or classes.

What is +1?
+1 is very similar to the “like” option on Facebook; you like a photo, comment or video that another user posted, and wanted to let the person know. Anyone who is in your circles will be able to see what you have +1’d.

What is a Hangout?
  • A “hangout” is a group video chat for up to 10 people. It can be access from a desktop computer, tablet or smartphone.
  • A “hangout on-air” is a video chat that can be live streamed for anyone to watch and can be replayed on YouTube or Google+. There is a Q & A option included in hangouts; this is great for bigger video chats, conferences or an informational meeting.
  • Hangouts between your circles or follower can be an “instant message;” it doesn’t have to be a video call.
What are Communities?
Communities are an easy way to connect with other users who share the same interests and/or passions. Communities make it easy to interact – post photos and videos, ask questions, join events and more.

Examples: Photography, Higher Education, Astrology, Food Lovers & more. How can I use Google+?

Circles
  • Create circles to organize your real-life interactions into different groups. If you have a group for your capstone, create a circle and when you send out a post or hangout for your group, you have the option to share it with that circle only.
  • Create a circle for friends, family, co-workers, or different clubs you participate in.
Communities
Join communities that you are interested in and/or are passionate about; there is truly a community for everyone. You might find an idea that you wouldn’t have found otherwise. +1 any post you like and it can be seen by everyone in your circles.

Hangouts
  • Hangouts are a great way for students studying abroad to keep in touch with family and friends back home. If you have a club meeting but not everyone can make it, a Hangout would allow you to meet with club members without meeting in the same place. There are Hangouts On-Air (live chats) happening all over the world you may be interested in, ranging in numerous topics.
  • A Hangout is private between you and up to 9 other people. A Hangout On-Air is public and live as soon as it is started.
  • Hangouts can also be used as a way of “instant messaging"; it does not have to be a video call.

Faculty/Staff
Circles
  • Create circles separating them between personal and work relationships.
  • Your department could be one circle, friends and family and different classes you teach. This is also a great resource for communicating with professionals in your field that may be located in a different country or state.
Communities
  • Join communities that share the same interests and passions as you, whether it’s your professional interests or your favorite pastimes like cooking. There are communities that range from Higher Education to Photography to Sewing.
  • If you join a Higher Education or Biology community as a Biology professor, you may post about your recent teachings or research.
Hangouts
Hangouts could be used as a video chat or an “instant message” between you and anyone in your circles. You could have a video chat with students or past students or have a face to face conversation with a friend/colleague without having to be in the same place.  You could also host your own Hangout On-Air to broadcast live to any viewers who are interested in your research and/or projects.
