Cody Fabian, a 2018 graduate of the Police Academy at Cazenovia College, is now an officer with the Ballston Spa Police Department. Fabian was born into a family of police officers. Even as a child, he knew that he would pursue a career in law enforcement. When deciding where to pursue training, Fabian knew the Police Academy at Cazenovia College was the place for him. “I found Cazenovia College and was drawn right into what was offered and the atmosphere that surrounded it,” Fabian recalled.
Cazenovia College’s Police Academy prepares cadets to earn a Phase I certificate of completion for the Pre-Employment Police Basic Training Program. Cazenovia’s program is designed to allow cadets like Fabian to continue their current employment and other responsibilities while completing the training program. Fabian attended classes in Cazenovia two evenings each week and on Saturdays. While he was a cadet at the academy, Fabian was also employed as an ambulance emergency medical technician (EMT).
“It was an experience I will never forget,” shared Fabian. “Looking back on the nine months I spent in the Police Academy makes me miss it tremendously. I had amazing instructors who were willing to go the extra mile to make sure we all succeeded. My fellow recruits also made it very enjoyable, because everyone worked together as a team and didn’t make anyone fight alone.”
Throughout training, cadets build a strong bond with each other and with their instructors. In order for cadets like Fabian to receive a Phase I certificate of completion, academic and physical standards must be met before the end of training. Fabian recalls the relationships that the cadets in his class formed, “The Police Academy is not easy no matter where you go. It is physically and mentally exhausting every day. Knowing that there are multiple recruits going through the same thing together as a team is very motivating to the point where you know you can complete whatever is asked of you.”
After graduating from the Police Academy in June of 2018, Fabian said he felt prepared to begin a career in law enforcement.  He added that all of the studying, discussions, and hands-on training helped him tremendously, saying now, “The Police Academy at Cazenovia College prepared me for the work I do every day as a police officer.”

When asked to sum up his experience in the Police Academy, Fabian said, “It was absolutely amazing. I would recommend this Police Academy to anyone interested in jumpstarting their career as a police officer.”
