After a glorious and celebratory Commencement ceremony on Saturday that emphasized the importance of inclusion, it was appalling and horrifying to learn of the shootings carried out by a white supremacist in Buffalo. While such acts of violence occur all too frequently in our country, this felt too close to home. It appears that the shooter was motivated by the racist and anti-Semitic "replacement theory," which promotes the idea that white Americans are being replaced by people of color. Beyond condemning this abhorrent act of domestic terrorism, we must actively seek to counter the forces of resentment and ignorance that give rise to such poisonous hatred. Our hearts are with those affected by this senseless tragedy.
